Item Description
Ship’s Brass Anchor Lantern with Fresnel Lens. Classic lanterns of this type were used for the purpose of signaling a vessel’s position while at anchor and also to light the ship’s cargo holds. When used on British Admiralty ships they were sometimes referred to as Admiralty Lanterns. Because of the visibility requirements they were fitted with Fresnel lens, originally developed for lighthouses by the French physicist August-Jean Fresnel, and which allows the light to be visible at greater distances. This hanging Anchor Lantern is fitted with a rippled clear glass Fresnel lens, has been converted for electricity, and is suitable for decorative or functional uses.
